Welcome to Grilling at the Green After Hours.
Brad Harvey:The conversation that took place after the show ended.
JT:Hi, everybody, it's JT and this is a special version of Grilling at the Green.
JT:Grilling at the Green is brought to you in part by Painted Hills Natural Beef.
JT:Beef you can be proud to serve your family and friends.
JT:That's Painted Hills Natural Beef.
JT:Hey, everybody.
JT:Welcome to After Hours.
JT:I'm jt.
JT:I'm here with Brad Harvey.
JT:You need to go look up the Gulf Heritage Society and you'll see Brad's smiling face there because He's a District 8 director.
JT:Is that right?
JT:Is that how you say it?
Brad Harvey:Yeah, I think.
Brad Harvey:Zone director.
Brad Harvey:Yeah.
JT:Yeah.
JT:Okay.
JT:All right, all right.
JT:So I'm going to abuse him here for just a few minutes in the after hours, and we'll start out with something kind of fun.
JT:Okay?
JT:You ready, Brett?
Brad Harvey:I'm ready.
JT:Okay, here we go.
JT:If you could play around of golf with one of your golfing heroes, who would it be?
JT:You can't say me.
Brad Harvey:Yeah, probably Jack Nicklaus.
JT:Yeah, yeah.
Brad Harvey:Or Tom Kite.
JT:Yeah, you know, some fun.
JT:Not a lot of people, when I ask him that question, bring up Tom Kite.
JT:Some of them will bring up Crenshaw once in a while.
JT:You know, they're kind of compatriots there, but they don't.
JT:Nobody's really said that, but probably, I don't know, four or five times only over the years that people have mentioned Tom Kite.
JT:That's it.
JT:That's good.
JT:I like it.
JT:Who was the biggest influence on you personally as far as your golf?
Brad Harvey:That'd be my dad.
Brad Harvey:Yeah, my dad was.
Brad Harvey:We, we were just lived off the second hole of Rogue Valley Country Club just down the street, and he was a member there.
Brad Harvey:And I don't know if he was club champion, but four ball champion, all that up there.
Brad Harvey:He was, he was a really good player.
Brad Harvey:And I just, I took up the game because he had it and he was, he was a golf collector, too, so.
JT:Oh, there you go.
Brad Harvey:Yeah.
JT:Okay.
JT:So, Brad, if you were declared supreme leader of golf for one day, just one day, what would you decree as supreme leader?
Brad Harvey:Make Augusta national public?
Brad Harvey:I don't know.
JT:With you, I'm worth.
JT:You're the first one that's ever said that, too.
JT:I, I like this.
JT:I like this guy.
JT:He's good.
JT:Well, good.
JT:What's the biggest mistake you ever made on a golf course besides like muffin a hole, you know?
Brad Harvey:You know, it's, it's, it's hard to say because I don't believe in right or wrong, Especially when it comes to golf, you know, it's always the decision.
Brad Harvey:You know something, I could take a double on one hole and a birdie on the next one.
Brad Harvey:It's.
Brad Harvey:It's.
Brad Harvey:I guess I.
Brad Harvey:Probably the biggest mistake I ever made on the golf course is not pursuing my playing more.
JT:Okay, fair enough.
Brad Harvey:Yeah.
JT:Name something that you were really enthused about when you first saw it or heard of it, and then with time passing, your excitement kind of fizzled.
Brad Harvey:Probably the golf ball is.
Brad Harvey:What is the name of the golf ball?
Brad Harvey:The one that Jack did.
Brad Harvey:There was a limited flight golf ball.
Brad Harvey:It's not the bottom ball.
Brad Harvey:What was that golf ball name had the dimples on the outside.
JT:Yeah.
Brad Harvey:And he did it in the Bahamas.
Brad Harvey:Can't think of it.
Brad Harvey:I'm getting old and I can't think of thing.
Brad Harvey:But it sounded like a good idea because you could have more golf courses, you know, because the ball would only go about 100 yards.
Brad Harvey:But then afterwards it's like.
Brad Harvey:Well, I don't like that because I want to see people hit at 300 yards, not 100.
JT:Yeah.
JT:If you could have dinner with a historical figure, who would it be and what would be on the menu?
JT:See, I always got to get food into this stuff because that's me.
JT:But historical figure.
JT:And who would it be and what would be on the menu?
Brad Harvey:Probably Philip, Hugh.
Brad Harvey:And we'd probably have steak because I'm a meat and potato kind of guys.
JT:Okay, fair enough.
JT:Anything for dessert?
Brad Harvey:No, just the cantor that we'd be talking about because he was a very famous club repair guy back in the hundred.
JT:So here's a fun one for you, Brad.
JT:What do you.
JT:What's one thing you miss about your 20s, besides not hurting when you get up in the morning?
Brad Harvey:You got that one for me?
Brad Harvey:You know, my mind.
Brad Harvey:I think when I was 20, I thought differently.
Brad Harvey:I could be.
Brad Harvey:I could really bear down and grind a little harder on the golf game or.
Brad Harvey:This is going to sound silly.
Brad Harvey:Sweating, you know, going out and working and really getting up a good sweat.
Brad Harvey:Now I dread the thought of sweating, you know, and my mind drifts a lot, so I kind of miss that.
Brad Harvey:Trying to stay focused, you know.
JT:Lawn chair on the patio or the deck looks pretty good some days, you.
Brad Harvey:Know, it sure does.
Brad Harvey:You know, if the fence is falling down, I just say, I'll get it tomorrow.
JT:Yep.
JT:Yep.
JT:Honey, can you call somebody about the fifth?
JT:Exactly one of those things.
JT:What's.
JT:What's the biggest change you think, if any should be made to Pro golf and amateur golf?
Brad Harvey:Well, that's a good question.
Brad Harvey:You know, golf is in such a good place right now.
Brad Harvey:I think we still really need to open it up more to more people.
Brad Harvey:Because if you look at it, you know, when you look at baseball and football and basketball, there's so many opportunities.
Brad Harvey:You got G League and basketball, you got minor leagues, all that.
Brad Harvey:We really don't have anything that for golf.
Brad Harvey:We have the Korn Ferry Tour and stuff like that.
Brad Harvey:And I think it needs to be opened up more.
Brad Harvey:We need to open up more junior things to have more kids be involved in golf.
Brad Harvey:Same thing with amateur.
Brad Harvey:There needs to be more opportunities for them to do things.
JT:Yeah.
JT:You know, if you look at baseball, you got the minors and football.
Brad Harvey:Minors, yeah.
JT:Yeah.
JT:And in football, you got the NFL, you got the usfl, you've got college, you've got city leagues, you got everything.
JT:It's very difficult.
JT:And I think that the PGA Tour has made it more difficult for people to get up on the big tour.
JT:Oh, you know, absolutely.
Brad Harvey:I remember there's.
Brad Harvey:There's some smaller tours around.
Brad Harvey:When I was.
Brad Harvey:When I was playing, I was down in Southern California, around the Bakersfield area, and they had the Golden State Tour.
Brad Harvey:Yeah, those guys were like, maybe the B players of the PGA Tour.
Brad Harvey:They would go out and shoot 64 in a day, you know, and so it's.
Brad Harvey:It's really hard.
Brad Harvey:I'd like to see some more development.
Brad Harvey:I'm glad the NCAA is doing that.
Brad Harvey:You could finish in the top 12 and the NCAAs and you got to kind of get your card, but it is hard.
Brad Harvey:You don't see the big college names transitioning to PGA Tour because it is so difficult.
Brad Harvey:And I wish we could do something to include more people in that.
JT:Well, there's such a pool of guys right below the 125 or whatever number you want to use.
JT:There's.
JT:There's this, like, human wave of people that have been, at one time or another, qualified to.
JT:Or qualified to get a chance to get.
JT:Qualified to get on the tour.
JT:And it's.
JT:It's kind of nuts.
Brad Harvey:It is a different.
Brad Harvey:I've gone to a couple of stops thinking, oh, I could do this.
Brad Harvey:And, you know, and you.
Brad Harvey:You go on a practice round and shoot 70, and you're 10 off the lead in one day.
Brad Harvey:You know, often, like, these guys are.
Brad Harvey:They're not human.
Brad Harvey:They're on a different planet.
Brad Harvey:It's just amazing.
JT:They're sharks.
Brad Harvey:Yeah.
JT:And, you know, you being a.
JT:Having been a teacher and all, do you think golf can help kids that have trouble with math and.
JT:Or social skills?
Brad Harvey:Oh, absolutely, absolutely.
Brad Harvey:I mean, golf is so social to begin with, and, you know, it's one of those things, is that you're.
Brad Harvey:You're out there and everybody's in the same boat.
Brad Harvey:It's like a kind of.
Brad Harvey:Golf is kind of like a sinking boat is that doesn't matter who you are, what you are, you're all going to climb together to survive.
Brad Harvey:And that's what golf is to me, is that when you're on the golf course, it doesn't matter your background or anything.
Brad Harvey:Everybody's going to be with you.
JT:Right.
Brad Harvey:And I think that's really good for kids.
Brad Harvey:And there's a lot of math in golf.
Brad Harvey:I mean, you're talking over par, calculating this.
Brad Harvey:You have to learn to focus.
Brad Harvey:I grew up with adhd, and it was very good for me to have one thing to focus on, and that was the next shot.
Brad Harvey:And so it's a kind of a calming thing.
Brad Harvey:You got to learn to say, okay, I got to do this.
Brad Harvey:It's not a force sport where you go hit someone harder.
Brad Harvey:It's, you know, you really gotta to stay calm, and I think it does wonders.
Brad Harvey:I used to teach junior golf all the time out at Merriweather.
Brad Harvey:I did it for about 25 years, and the kids could really get into it, and it calms them down because it's an active sport, too, because you're walking, you're moving, you're hitting something and stuff.
Brad Harvey:So it's.
Brad Harvey:It's a great sport for kids.
JT:And a lot of times you're off looking for your ball in rough terrain.
JT:So you get a little mountaineering skill in there too.
Brad Harvey:Absolutely.
Brad Harvey:Yeah.
Brad Harvey:Orientation and stuff like that.
Brad Harvey:Got to bring a compass sometimes.
JT:A search party.
JT:Here you go.
JT:Exactly.
JT:If you could erase one mistake from your past, what would it be?
Brad Harvey:You know, probably in high school, I had this one tournament that it's.
Brad Harvey:I was going long and we had to qualify each week to.
Brad Harvey:To make varsity.
Brad Harvey:And I had a bad hole and I let it get to me, and it was only like a bogey or double or something like that.
Brad Harvey:So I went to the next hole and I just kind of quit from there.
Brad Harvey:And I would have been the number one guy going into the varsity tournament, which would have got me to state everything else like that.
Brad Harvey:And I.
Brad Harvey:I let my emotions get the best of me that day.
Brad Harvey:And I wish I wouldn't have.
Brad Harvey:If I could do that, I think it would have changed just a little different of My golf path a little bit.
JT:Yeah, I understand.
JT:If you were an animal, Brad, what animal would you be?
Brad Harvey:Oh, I don't know.
Brad Harvey:Probably.
Brad Harvey:Well, my wife's favorite animal is like an otter, so probably an otter.
JT:You know, they're cute.
Brad Harvey:Well, they're cute.
Brad Harvey:They could swim well and they have a great mustache, you know, and they could.
Brad Harvey:They, you know, they just don't have a care of anything, it seems like.
JT:Right.
JT:Yeah.
JT:And they stand up and kind of look like a meerkat sometimes.
Brad Harvey:Yeah, exactly.
Brad Harvey:They're long, they're lanky, you know.
JT:Yeah.
JT:I don't qualify anymore to be an otter.
JT:I'm more like the walrus.
JT:What's the first thing you do when you get up in the morning?
Brad Harvey:Well, it's kind of funny because it's so.
Brad Harvey:I don't want to say it's the same thing every day, but it kind of is.
Brad Harvey:Is that the situation that I'm in is that I'm my son's personal caretaker and I'm actually a state employee for that.
Brad Harvey:I'm glad we live in a country that will actually pay me to do that.
Brad Harvey:And so the first thing I get up is that it's the same old, same old.
Brad Harvey:We get up and.
Brad Harvey:And I.
Brad Harvey:I go see him.
Brad Harvey:Yeah.
JT:Yeah.
Brad Harvey:The first thing I do is that.
Brad Harvey:That's My mind is just automatic.
Brad Harvey:Kind of like when you get up and go to work, that's.
Brad Harvey:That's what I do.
Brad Harvey:I just get up and go see him.
Brad Harvey:Then see what the day day does.
JT:Good for you.
JT:Good for you.
JT:Couple more here.
JT:What?
JT:This is always one that people really like.
JT:What would be your last meal on death row?
Brad Harvey:Oh, boy.
Brad Harvey:My last meal.
JT:Yeah.
Brad Harvey:Boy, that would be a tough one because, you know, I don't know if I could actually eat knowing that I'm not going to be around much longer, but.
JT:Well, you can eat anything.
JT:You don't have to worry about too many calories.
Brad Harvey:This is true.
Brad Harvey:This is true.
Brad Harvey:So I would probably want the old school McDonald's milkshakes they used to do once a month in the paper cups.
Brad Harvey:Yeah, my brother and I used to get those and we would freeze them.
Brad Harvey:Then it was almost like ice cream instead of a shake after that.
Brad Harvey:So that's probably once they could do the old menu like that.
JT:Yeah, you could do whatever you want.
JT:And they.
JT:I think they don't have to do it, but they.
JT:They try to do it.
JT:Okay, Brad, last question here.
JT:This is your opportunity.
JT:What is your message to the.
Brad Harvey:You know what?
Brad Harvey:Just smile and just let Things be how they are, you know, you never know what the future is going to hold and you just got to enjoy it while you can.
JT:Absolutely.
JT:We're here really for a pretty short time.
Brad Harvey:Yeah, absolutely.
Brad Harvey:And you got to enjoy the best you can.
Brad Harvey:Just like when you're playing on a golf course, like if you get to go to Pinehurst, you don't want to be angry the whole 18 holes because how many have like that?
Brad Harvey:It's a blessing that we have every day that we're up and we get to do things and see people.
JT:Yep, absolutely.
JT:Brad Harvey, Region 8 director from the Gulf Heritage Society.
JT:Plus his acumen as a club repairman, creator, fixer, hickory magic guy, all these things.
Brad Harvey:It's.
JT:It's been really good to meet me, Brad.
JT:And we will have you back on the show and maybe we'll put you and Akbar in the show together and see if you can make him like only talk in short sentences.
JT:How's that?
Brad Harvey:Could probably do that.
Brad Harvey:Because I have some things I need to talk to about because he was.
Brad Harvey:I wanted him to play for Beaverton.
Brad Harvey:He played for Westview and he was in my wife's class at Five Oaks and I always tried to get him to come to Beaverton and he never did, so.
JT:Well, we'll work on that.
Brad Harvey:We'll get there.
JT:We'll work on that.
JT:Thank you, Brad Harvey.
JT:Hey, we're going to get out of here.
JT:This is after hours on.
JT:What are.
JT:What is this show anyway?
JT:Grilling at the Green.
JT:Invite you to listen to us on few of the radio stations, our own podcast versions and the Golf Newsnet out there on iHeart.
JT:We do well on that.
JT:And the first, I think three, four episodes of Grilling at the Green television is now available on Golf Newsnet Television.
JT:So if you go to GNN and look at their website, they'll tell you how to get it.
JT:And I think you can see the previews of the shows on the website too.
JT:So anyway, I'm jt.
JT:Yeah, it's a lot of fun.
JT:We'll be back next week and go out there, play some golf, have some fun.
JT:And most, as I always say, be kind.
JT:Take care, everybody.
